Our 11th grade students recently returned from a weekend trip to visit The University of Colorado at Boulder, Colorado College, The University of Denver, and CSU-Pueblo. Breakthrough Santa Fe provides an eight-week teaching residency based at Santa Fe Preparatory School. Each middle school summer teacher is responsible for planning and implementing two or three sections of a core academic class (with no more than seven students per class) as well as a teacher-designed elective; teachers also serve as committee members, advisers, dodge-ball competitors, mentors, and more! In addition, we will hire three teachers to teach in our College Bound program which offers one and two week sessions of college prep, writing enrichment, ACT prep, college campus visits, and career panels for our 9th-12th grade students. The three students, Connor Carman (Santa Fe High), Maritza Ochoa (Capital), and Ruby Grajeda (Capital), were selected as 2010 Simon Scholars after a competitive application process. The Simon Scholarship provides students with extensive college counseling, a laptop computer, and $4600/year in college. Nine students from Santa Fe were awarded the scholarship. The group includes a State Champion in Women’s Basketball, a Daniels Scholar, a UNM Presidential Scholar, multiple SFPS “Super Scholars,” a prom queen, and many more accomplished individuals. The goal of the trip was for students to experience college life and explore what types of schools would fit them best. The group ate in dining halls, visited dorm rooms, met with admissions officers, and talked with a number of current students. Kent Denver School, the host school of Breakthrough Denver, hosted the group and generously let the Breakthrough Santa Fe students and staff camp out in a common room.
